ABOUT THIS CONFERENCE

Just as Sacramento is the focal point for State legislative activity, FACCC’s Advocacy and Policy conference is the centerpiece of policy, information, advocacy, and FACCCtivism for community college faculty. This is the place where you’ll receive the most up-to-date information on budget, legislative and retirement issues, and where you’ll translate that knowledge into action. It’s also the place where you’ll honor your colleagues who have organized, mobilized and energized faculty to engage in political action for community colleges at the district and State levels.

TOPICS INCLUDE:

  • How faculty should lobby the 2009-10 budget, including the $50 million request for “Student Success”
  • How community colleges must politically position themselves in the midst of an economic decline
  • How faculty can stand up and oppose outside forces, attempting to hard fought protections in funding, retirement and academic freedom
  • How faculty can successfully advocate such faculty priorities as 75/25, part-time equity and professional development

SPEAKERS

This year we are honored to have Chancellor Jack Scott as our keynote speaker. Dr. Jack Scott officially became the 14th Chancellor of the California Community Colleges on January 1, 2009. During his 12-year legislative career, Dr. Scott authored 86 Senate bills and 72 Assembly bills. Among other leadership positions, he was Chair of the Senate Education Committee. Before being elected to the Legislature, Dr. Scott worked for 23 years in the community colleges. Dr. Scott served as President of Pasadena City College from 1987 to 1995 and President of Cypress College from 1978-87. He was a history professor at Pepperdine University for 10 years before becoming Dean of Instruction at Orange Coast College in 1973.

In addition, FACCC will bring forward a bipartisan group of policymakers, analysts and consultants who know Sacramento from the “inside,” to help you be a strong and effective advocate.

Prior FACCC conferences have featured such notables as former Assembly Speaker Fabian Nuñez, Sacramento Bee columnist Dan Walters, and former System Chancellors Tom Nussbaum and Mark Drummond.

On Monday, March 2, Legislators will be available to address attendees of the conference.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

All faculty members are urged to attend with a special invitation to those participating on negotiating teams (pre-conference focus group). Academic senate leaders, and those who work in categorically funded programs should make this conference a priority.

Community college students are also invited.
