Ruby Christian-Brougham, Candidate for Governor Large-Sized Colleges
Los Angeles Valley College

California Community Colleges are the backbone of educational opportunities in our state, yet they have been chronically underfunded and under-resourced since the passage of Prop 13 in 1978. This ongoing neglect is evident in persistent attacks on the 50% law, the passage of AB 705, AB 1705, AB 928, and in the unprecedented amounts locked away in college reserves, directly threatening the future of our students and communities. Now, more than ever, as we face demographic changes, mounting challenges from Artificial Intelligence, and the lingering effects of pandemic-induced learning loss, we stand at a crossroads. The time for action is now. We must think boldly and implement real solutions that ensure our community colleges not only survive but thrive, delivering hope and opportunity for generations to come.

To advance these critical goals, I took the initiative to launch conversations on pivotal Artificial Intelligence legislation (AB 2370 and SB 241) within the Budget and Legislative Committee. I have also been piloting the building of a broad coalition with FACCC partnering with Los Angeles Community College, the Union, and the District Academic Senate. Together, we have increased support and momentum for AB 1705 and identified and worked on legislative hurdles. As broader coalitions, we can coordinate advocacy efforts against powerful, well-funded interests like the Campaign for College Opportunity and the Gates Foundation. As a coalition, we can elevate the voices of faculty and students in policy discussions through our unified actions. By forging stronger partnerships between unions, the Senate, and community college leaders, we can secure equitable funding and a brighter future for every student.

Equally vital is our unwavering commitment to inclusion, equity, and diversity in every facet of our FACCCtivism. This is not just a principle; it must be a driving force behind everything we do. I am dedicated to expanding our vision of equity, ensuring that our organization leads the way in building a more just and inclusive community for all.

I have been, and will remain, an unwavering advocate for the rights of all faculty to ensure academic freedom (including responsible guardrails on A.I.), access to health care, paid office hours, fair salaries, and the realization of a one-tiered faculty system. My experience and expertise in problem-solving, data-driven analysis, and strategic leadership empower me to deliver real results: increased communication, greater transparency, and lasting efficiency.

I have served on the FACCC legislative and Advocacy Committee for 6 years, the BiPOC Committee for 6 months, on the AB1705 think tank for 7 months, as governor-at-large for 2 years, and as governor, Area B, for 2 years.

I am deeply honored to serve in FACCC leadership and dedicated to fighting for our shared values every single day. If you believe in a brighter future for our colleges and communities, I humbly ask for your support and your vote for Governor, Large-Size College. I hope and remain optimistic that we can make a change together.
