Emily Schmidt, Santa Rosa Jr. College
Discipline: Humanities and Religious Studies

Emily is part-time faculty in Humanities and Religious Studies at Santa Rosa Junior College (SRJC) where she began her college career. Having been both a student and a teacher at SRJC, Emily appreciates the value of community colleges. Her dedication to public education led Emily to join the FACCC Board of Governors. Emily also serves on SRJC’s All Faculty Association’s Executive Council and Negotiations Team, on the Academic Senate, and on various college committees.

The SRJC Academic Senate gave her a Champion of Inclusivity Award for her advocacy on behalf of equity and inclusion for associate faculty, and for emphasizing the importance of part-time faculty working conditions for fostering student equity. Her research and teaching interests center on the human experience, especially religions in the Roman Empire, archaeology of religion, religious and cultural identities, politics and religion in the U.S., and the construction of American identity. Courses she has taught include Early Christian Literature, Religion in America, World Religions, History of Satan, Comparative Mythology, Friendship, and Monsters.

Her personal interests include walking/hiking, dancing, and reading science fiction, fantasy, and crime procedurals. She lives with and likes to hang out with her husband (who is also a former SRJC student) and their dog (who is named after a Star Trek: DS9 character).
